Keep the paper!

Chris flicked the corner of the paper a few times. Then he shoved it back in his pocket and continued on his way home. He ran up the stairs to his apartment as fast as he could, eager to see if this paper really could make his dreams come true.

When he sat down at his kitchen table, he realized that he had no pen nearby. He went to check in his room, but he couldn't find one. He thought it to be very strange, since he always kept one on his nightstand for whenever he woke up in the middle of the night with a song idea. But now there was nothing.

He dejectedly sat down at the table once more and threw the paper down. It seemed like nothing would ever go right for him- first Jonny, now this...

No pen will help you...

Chris didn't see the new writing at first, since he had taken to laying his head down on the table. Then he thought he felt the sharp edge of the paper stab him in the arm. He looked up and saw that somehow the paper had moved closer to him.

You can not write in ink...

"Well, then, what the hell am I supposed to write in??" he asked aloud. He didn't seem to think it odd to speak to a piece of paper.

Blood.

Eh, why not? You've got plenty of blood, what is there to lose?
B-blood? I'm not so sure about that...

Eh, why not? You've got plenty of blood, what is there to lose?

Chris stared at the paper for a while. He slowly stood up and walked over to the counter, grabbing a knife from the drawer. He brought it over to where the paper was and laid it down.

His eyes moved back and forth between the paper and the knife. The more he thought about it, the more ridiculous it seemed...

But his desires overruled every other thought in his mind, and he grabbed the knife. He only cut a small line on his fingertip, just enough for a tiny bit of blood...

What is it you want?

Chris watched the blood seep through the opening in his finger. He took a deep breath and pressed his finger to the paper.

Jonny.

Then suddenly the phone began to ring. Chris started, spun around and froze, eyes wide with fear.

Answer the freaking phone!!
Leave it... this is too weird.

Answer the freaking phone!!

Chris eventually stood up and grabbed the phone, making sure not to get any blood on it.

"Hello?" he asked.

"Hey..." He recognized the voice as Jonny's... but how did he get Chris's number? "Listen, I've been thinking, and... well, would it be all right if I come over?"

"Yeah, sure," Chris breathlessly replied. "Drop by whenever you like."

"Cool. My shift ends soon, so I'll be there in, like, ten minutes. Bye."

"Bye," Chris mindlessly mimicked. He hung up the phone and set it back on the charger, stunned.

Then he collapsed onto his couch and just stared into space. Was it really possible for a piece of paper to change his fate like that? Was Jonny really coming over to talk to him?

Chris looked down and realized that he should probably put a bandaid on his finger. He stood up to walk to the bathroom, but he started to feel dizzy. The room was spinning and blurring and before he knew it, everything went black.

--

When he opened his eyes again, all he could see was Jonny hovering over him.

"Oh, good, you're awake."

"I... passed out..." Chris said. "Everything started spinning..."

"Do you need anything?" Jonny asked. "Like, water or something?"

"Water would be nice," Chris replied. "There are cups in the strainer, tap water is fine."

Jonny nodded and ran into the other room. Chris tried to sit up, and he managed to successfully do so with relative ease. He felt much better than he had before, but he decided not to move any further. He looked down at his hand to see the state of his finger, and was shocked to find that it was completely healed.

Jonny came back in a minute carrying a large cup of water. He handed it to Chris then sat down beside him.

"So yeah," Jonny began out of nowhere, "maybe it wouldn't be so weird... you know, us... maybe."

Chris looked up at him. "W-we could try... and see how it works."

Jonny smiled and slowly reached out for Chris's free hand. He laced their fingers together and sighed.

"Yeah, I guess it's not so bad."

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Leave it... this is too weird.

Chris couldn't move. He thought about answering the phone, but he was paralyzed with fear.

Eventually the phone stopped ringing, and Chris sighed a breath of relief. Then he immediately looked back at the paper. Jonny. still shone in bright red. Chris quickly grabbed the knife and ripped a hole through the paper, hoping that it would destroy it or something.

After all, he wouldn't want Jonny to like him just because of some weird magical paper.

He sat back in his chair once the paper was in shreds. His finger was starting to irritate him a little, so he decided to go get himself a bandaid and maybe clean it out a little. He stood up to walk to the bathroom, but he started to feel dizzy. The room was spinning and blurring and before he knew it, everything went black.

--

He woke up to the sound of sirens blaring outside. Instictively, he ran to the window to see what was going on. From the way the lights reflected off the windows in the buildings on the other side of the street, he could tell that what appeared to be several cop cars and ambulances were parked down by the corner.

Chris ran outside to join the ever-growing mass of people gathered around to see what the problem was. Whispers of a shootout made their way through the crowd, and it was at that precise moment that Chris's heart sank:

Two men walked out of the convenience store with a stretcher, a white sheet covering the body. He had no actual proof, but Chris knew who it was.

When he reentered his apartment later, the pieces of paper still rested on the kitchen table. He walked over to them and searched through, looking for one specific line of writing. Without thinking twice, he held the paper tightly in his hand as he found yet another use for the knife.

WHAT? That's not a good ending. :(

B-blood? I'm not so sure about that...

Chris laughed. He laughed at the piece of paper. He shook his head at it, then decided this time to throw it away.

He walked into his living room, collapsed on the couch, and turned on the TV. There was hardly anything good on ever, but he decided to flip through the channels anyway.

Sure, he was sad. The morning hadn't gone exactly as he would have liked, but he could get over it. After all, Jonny didn't like him... it wasn't the end of the world.

Hmm... Well, that could have turned out better...

Shhhh, don't say anything. People get lonely sometimes, it's not like he's trying to tell you anything.

"It sucks," Chris said. "But I can deal with it."

"Well, it helps to have friends who you can bother while they're trying to work, doesn't it?" Jonny laughed.

"It does," Chris smiled.

Chris decided to buy a paper that day. He stayed for quite a while and just read it. Every now and then Jonny would make some odd remark about his job, and Chris would look up and laugh, then return to reading.

He wasn't really reading. He was looking at the words and hoping that Jonny would, out of nowhere, have the guts to do what Chris couldn't. Of course, that would require him to have feelings for Chris, which Chris was convinced Jonny didn't have.

"Well," Chris finally said, "I best be heading out now, I think. Got a long day ahead of me."

"See you tomorrow, man," Jonny smiled.

Chris returned the smile halfheartedly, then slowly made his way out the door. He began to walk back to his apartment, feeling a little down like he always did when he left Jonny without having said anything meaningful. But he knew he could always go back tomorrow and try again. Yeah, maybe tomorrow he'd have enough courage.

"Wait, Chris!!" a voice called down the sidewalk. Chris turned around to see Jonny headed towards him.

"Hey," Chris said.

"My shift just ended," Jonny casually began, "I was wondering... if you're not busy, maybe you'd wanna go get something to eat?"

Chris's heart fluttered and he smiled widely. "Yeah, that sounds great."

Jonny and Chris began to walk to the only restaurant they knew existed. At least, the only one on that street that they knew existed. They walked in silence, but Chris's mind was racing with crazy thoughts and radical ideas...

Hold his hand, hold his hand! Awww....
Stop it with this craziness! Just keep walking.

Hold his hand, hold his hand! Awww....

Not being able to take it any longer, Chris reached out and grabbed Jonny's hand. Jonny was a bit startled at first, but he accepted the gesture and reestablished his grip on Chris's hand.

"I've liked you for a really long time, Chris," Jonny said. "I was just... too afraid to ask..."

"I know, I was afraid, too. But... I'm glad you asked."

Jonny smiled and laughed a little. "I'm glad you said yes."

"Of course," Chris cheerfully replied. "For you I would always say yes."

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
